Sarah Sorby
School Counselor
SCHOOL COUNSELOR IDENTITY
Leader: As a School Counselor, I will be a voice supporting my school populace, offering help to fellow counselors and administration, and teaching students curriculum to further their holistic development.

Connector: I will build up expertise in our school and community resources so I can connect students and their families to any available supports. I will also establish trusting relationships with administration, faculty and staff, and my own students, cementing my ability to connect them with one another.

Advocate: In the school ecosystem, I will assess school data, pinpoint achievement gaps, and develop curriculum and policies aimed at reducing those gaps. The curriculum will be a key tenet in the Comprehensive School Counseling Program I aim to consult on and deliver. I will advocate for progress of the role of School Counselor by advocating for legislation to fund paid internship and practicum positions, increasing equitable access for necessary graduate school completion; I will also advocate for reaching the ASCA-recommended counselor-to-student ratio in my school.

Champion: I will fight for causes that increase equity and serve my school’s students best interests as learners, citizens, and human beings.

Emergency Responder: I will seek out training in trauma response and crisis intervention. I will participate on and advance teams handling emergencies at my school.

Continuous Learner: In filling the roles above, it will also be my responsibility to continuously expand my knowledge, improve my efficacy, and overall better myself as a person and a counselor. For these reasons I aim to become bilingual in Spanish and English, obtain a Trauma-Informed Certificate, and credential myself to hold a supervisory position over interning school counselors in the future.
